Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To provide an in depth introduction to molecular and cellular mechanisms underpinning neuroscience. This will provide the basis for further in depth study in final year courses.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this course the student should be able to:
* Distinguish the different cell types of the nervous system and understand the molecular differences between them
* Describe the molecular and chemical basis of electrical signalling in neurons
* Understand the molecular basis of chemical neurotransmission
* Describe the characteristics of receptors and ion channels that mediate electrical and chemical signalling in the nervous system
* Show an understanding of the molecular basis of neuronal development and cell death in the nervous system.

Content:
1. An introduction to the nervous system including detailed molecular analysis of different neurons and glial types.
2. Detailed analysis of the molecular basis of electrical and chemical signalling between neurons.
3. Overview of neurotransmitters, receptors, ion channels, including key molecular aspects of the major classes.
4. A thorough description of molecular aspects of neuronal development.
5. An introduction to some cellular aspects of neuroscience, including synaptic plasticity and neurodegeneration.
