Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To develop an appreciation of the complexity of environmental interactions and the ways in which human activities can impinge on the ecosystem as a whole. To explore the nature of pollutants and their major environmental effects. To introduce the technologies used to control the levels of pollutants in air and water.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit students should have an appreciation of the influence of human activities on the earth's ecosystem at a range of levels including both biotic and non-biotic components of the ecosphere. They should also develop an awareness of how such influences impinge on the viability of human populations. After successfully completing this unit the students should also know the operating and design principles of the major technologies for treating polluted air and water, the pollutants which they are most effective at controlling, and be able to recommend appropriate solutions to particular cases of pollution control.

Skills:
The ability to assess the influence of a specific human activity at both local and global levels and to form a reasoned assessment of the possible environmental consequences over a range of time scales. The ability to identify and assess technologies for the control and mitigation of pollutant release. Taught/facilitated and assessed.

Content:
Introduction to the concepts of an integrated environment - the Gaia hypothesis.
Life cycle analysis.
Biodiversity.
Principles of toxicology.
Energy conversion and the environment.
Pinch analysis.
Hydrogen economy
Climate change.
Ozone depletion.
The nature, effects and control of water and air pollution.
