Description: | Aims: To develop an understanding of homogeneous catalytic transformations involving C=C and C=O bonds, their mechanisms and the importance of the products they generate. Learning Outcomes: After studying this Unit, students should be able to: * Appreciate catalytic cycles and their mechanisms. * See from both organic and inorganic perspectives how catalytic cycles involving transformations of C=C and C=O bonds occur. * Appreciate the structures and reactivities of key transition metal intermediates on catalytic cycles. * Understand how changes of metal-ligand stereoelectronic effects bring about improvements in catalyst activity. Skills: Data analysis (T, F, A), problem solving (T, F, A). Content: Metal mediated reactions - H-X addition across C=C bonds: hydrogenation, hydrocyanation, conjugate addition. Epoxidation. Ring-opening and -closing metathesis. Transformations with C=O bonds: Methanol carbonylation, ketone hydrogenation, Lewis acid catalysis. |
