The course aims to help students access increasingly more demanding reading and listening material.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the course students will be able to
* Give clear detailed descriptions and presentations on a wide range of subjects related to their field of interest expanding and supporting ideas with subsidiary points and examples.
* Understand the gist and some detail of recorded or broadcast audio material on topics of personal and general interest and on current affairs when the delivery is relatively slow and clear and delivered in standard dialect.
* Access more demanding authentic texts with the help of a dictionary.
* Produce short descriptive and narrative texts with a high degree of accuracy for basic structures.
* Write formal and informal letters with a high degree of accuracy for basic structures.
* Attempt simple discursive essays.

Content:
The course consolidates previously acquired language structures and skills and develops the four core competences of listening, speaking, reading and writing. More complex language structures are introduced and practised, such as the conditional. Reading and listening material on new topic areas will help students extend their passive vocabulary. Topics of general interest and cultural relevance will be discussed, helping students to express and dispute opinions and to encourage spontaneous responses. In addition to the two hours of class tuition, which concentrate on integrated skills, one hour will be spent on developing writing skills so that students can express opinions in a short discursive essay.
