Description: | Aims: To introduce and develop experimental skills required to execute and report pharmacological investigations in isolated cells, organs and the whole organism. Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit, the student should be familiar with the techniques (cellular, tissue, systemic) used to study the pharmacology of a range of mediators and drugs, and be able to present experimental data in good scientific style. The student will demonstrate an understanding and practical ability using these techniques. Students will develop their understanding of the ethical framework for using animals in medical research. Skills: Scientific and practical skills (T/F/A) Study skills, handling information, working with others (T/F) Problem solving (T/F) Presentation skills. Content: Examination of the pharmacology of vascular and airway smooth muscle, the CNS and whole animal physiology; using organ bath, electrophysiology, ligand binding, cell culture, immuno- and molecular techniques. Experimental design and statistical analysis of data. |
