| Description: |
Aims: To review and evaluate the key issues in public health pharmacy. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit the student will be able to: 1. Critically discuss the nature of public health and how it is delivered (knowledge and understanding) 2. Critically evaluate the opportunities in pharmaceutical public health for self-development and the developments in community pharmacy and the role of the PCT pharmacist (knowledge and understanding, personal transferable skill) 3. Undertake a health technology assessment of a controversial use of a prescribed medicine (intellectual skill, professional practical skill) 4. Complete and evaluate a health equity audit of the use of particular drug in a PCT (professional practical skill) 5. Develop the skills necessary to improve the health of the local population through implementing and promoting healthy behaviours and clinically effective and cost effective medicinal drugs, as well as the health of friends, colleagues and family (knowledge and understanding, professional practical skill) 6. Influence policy formation on pharmaceutical public health in the community pharmacy and/or PCT (knowledge and understanding, professional practical skill) 7. Critically discuss the public health implications of CV health and the role of the pharmacist in this 8. Review smoking as a public health issue and critically discuss the role of Smoking Cessation schemes and their efficacy 9. Describe and the role of the pharmacist in the care of drug dependent people and critically evaluate the public health benefits of this role Content: * What is Public Health * Socioeconomic determinants of health and disease * Legal framework for public health * Major Public Health Agencies * Cross boundary working * Health needs assessment * Pharmacoepidemiology; systems, data, interpretation * Pharmacovigilance; systems, data, interpretation * Health Promotion; areas and communication strategies; changing behaviours; outline consideration of disease; Accident prevention, Dental public health, sexual health, mental health, cancer, communicable disease and antibiotic resistance * Substance misuse, smoking cessation; cardiovascular. |
