To introduce students to some of the key periods in Italian cultural history, to study the main developments in late 19th century literature and post-war Italian cinema. To familiarise students with basic concepts of narrative in film and literature, while linking these to their historical context.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the unit students will be able to:
* understand the importance Italy’s cultural and artistic heritage.
* understand the importance of Neorealism in Italian post-war film;
* analyse critically two key films of the Neorealist movement.
* understand how a prose text works in terms of point of view, time, character, etc.

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Skills in effective learning are developed in this unit.

Content:
Developments in Italian culture since the Middle Ages. Literature from Romanticism to Verismo. The Neorealist cinema, the key films of this movement and their critical reception. A contemporary short story.
