Description: | Aims: To introduce a multidisciplinary course in biotechnology and business, designed for students with enthusiasm for enterprise and who intend to pursue a career at the interface of technology and commerce. Learning Outcomes: After taking this course the students should be able to * Write a broad-based review of exploitable biotechnology including nanobiotechnology, biofuels, biosensors, protein production, extremophile biopharmaceutical production, microbial natural products, viral products and computer aided drug design * Produce a business plan based on research knowledge on one specific product. This will be based on the management of technology and innovation, IPR, patenting and professional codes of practice within appropriate economic frameworks. * Demonstrate transferable skills (ability to recognise and exploit innovation, motivation and team building, managing risk, acquisition of venture capital, technology transfer etc). Content: It will provide an understanding of the principles and practice of advanced biotechnology and its exploitation in commercial practice as described by speakers from industry. It will provide the knowledge base required to understand, create and manage biotech business, focusing on business strategies and management principles. |
