To further develop and reinforce the skills necessary for research work. To develop the students ability to communicate scientific data in both written and oral form. Learning Outcomes: After taking this course the student should be able to: * survey current relevant literature using appropriate databases e.g. SciFinder, Web of Knowledge; * present research work in both written and oral formats and place a research project into the context of other researchers' work; * critically evaluate results, draw appropriate conclusions and identify areas for future research; * construct a research proposal that will form the starting point for their Masters research project (CH50201). Skills: Research Methods (T,F,A), Information handling & retrieval (T,F,A), Numeracy & computation (F, A), Problem solving (T, F, A), Scientific writing (F, A), Independent working (F). Content: A research topic will be selected in conjunction with a supervising member of staff and the student will then carry out a literature survey of the relevant background and present a critical written appraisal of it. The student will present a concise summary of the survey in an oral presentation and draft a short research proposal that will form the starting point for the Masters research project (CH50201). |
