Description: | Aims: To allow students to experience an in-depth, open-ended full-time practical research project typical of research in an academic environment. To further develop and reinforce the skills necessary for research work. Learning Outcomes: After taking this course the student should be able to: * demonstrate advanced experimental techniques appropriate to the chosen project, including independent use of sophisticated instrumentation appropriate to the research field; * work with minimal supervision and guidance; * work safely in a laboratory in a manner commensurate with current legislation; * record experimental observations and data in an efficient manner; * place and evaluate experimental results in the context of other researchers' work; * write an extended scientific report commensurate with a chosen journal style, with the potential for publication; * discuss and defend the conclusions drawn from the study in an oral examination; * demonstrate the ability to conduct and develop an experimental programme. Skills: Research Methods (T,F,A), Numeracy (F, A), Problem solving (T, F, A), Scientific writing (F, A), Independent working (F). Content: A research topic will be selected in conjunction with a supervising member of staff and a program of experimental work planned. The content will be project specific, but will entail advanced experimental methodology in either computational, synthetic or physical chemistry. |
