Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To allow students to develop the skills necessary for preparing a research project in an academic environment, including writing a short research proposal. To further develop and reinforce the skills necessary for research work. To develop the students ability to communicate scientific data in both written and oral form.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this course the student should be able to:
* survey current relevant literature using appropriate databases e.g. SciFinder, Web of Knowledge;
* present research work in both written and oral formats and place a research project into the context of other researchers' work;
* critically evaluate results, draw appropriate conclusions and identify areas for future research;
* construct a research proposal that will form the starting point for their Masters research project (CH50201).

Content:
A research topic will be selected in conjunction with a supervising member of staff and the student will then carry out a literature survey of the relevant background and present a critical written appraisal of it. The student will present a concise summary of the survey in an oral presentation and draft a short research proposal that will form the starting point for the Masters research project (CH50201).
