Description: | Aims: To introduce students to the design processes by taking a requirement through to a prototype device. To provide students with knowledge and awareness of the legal framework under which professional engineers operate, knowledge of innovation in products and in manufacturing processes applicable to the area of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit students should be able to: write a design specification for a product; carry out a top-down systematic design; identify and specify interface requirements for sub-systems; demonstrate an appreciation of how assumptions about the system model can affect the effectiveness of the design solution; demonstrate familiarity with the legal framework under which professional engineers operate; identify the steps taken in innovating and manufacturing electronic and electrical products; present information in a logical and convincing manner. Skills: Problem solving; oral communication; working as part of a group; information acquisition, handling and analysis. Taught, facilitated and tested. Content: Product design: preparation of specifications; definition of systems and sub-systems. Reliability methods: FMEA, FTA, reliability estimating. Group design exercise: working in groups to produce a prototype of a small system using electronics for monitoring, control, measurement and signal processing. Hardware & software design issues. Lectured content: national, EU and world legislation, data protection act, freedom of information act, health and safety, functional safety and safety critical, environmental legislation, professional and product liability, innovation and creativity tools, quality function deployment, value analysis, design for manufacture and assembly, manufacturing implementation, process and materials selectors, change management, technology exploitation. |
