Description: | Aims: To acquaint students with the work of writers who have lived and worked in the West Country, from Sheridan to today. Learning Outcomes: Having completed this unit students will be able to: * identify characteristics of literary works by writers who have lived and worked in the English West Country * locate pieces of West Country writing in their historical period * make connections between literary texts and their social, political, regional and artistic contexts * recognize literary styles * discuss literary genres * apply a variety of methods of critical theory to literary texts * analyse literary language * analyse translation from text to film. Skills: Having completed this unit students will be able to: * introduce and discuss individually researched material to others (F/A) * apply a variety of methods of critical analysis to text (F/A) * give seminar presentations, learning to suit their material to their audience and to lead discussion and encourage participation (F/A). Content: 1) Richard B. Sheridan (plays, 18th century) 2) Jane Austen (novels, late 18th - early 19th century) 3) Thomas Hardy (poetry and novels, late 19th - early 20th century) 4) A variety of poetry (from 18th, 19th and 20th centuries) 5) Crysse Morrison (novels, 20th and 21st centuries) Video adaptations of some of the texts Students will be asked to focus on specific themes in the literature. |
