| Description:
| Aims: To introduce students to the main literary developments, movements and themes of the nineteenth century. Learning Outcomes: Having completed this unit students will be able to: * identify a chronological development of English literature through the nineteenth century * locate pieces of writing at their correct point in the nineteenth century * identify the progress of specific literary movements through the nineteenth century * make connections between literary texts and their social, political, regional, scientific, artistic and philosophical contexts * make connections between literary movements in England and their counterparts in Europe and the United States of America * analyse the development of literary language through the nineteenth century. Skills: Having completed this unit students will be able to: * introduce individually researched material to other students (F/A) * apply a variety of methods of critical analysis to texts (F/A) * give seminar presentations, learning to suit their material to their audience and to lead discussion and encourage participation (F/A). Content: 1) Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (novel) 2) Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (novel) 3) The Importance of Being Ernest by Oscar Wilde (play) 4) A variety of poetry from throughout the century. Poets to include Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, the Rossettis, Tennyson. 5) A variety of additional and supplementary texts will be suggested by the tutor. A film version of a play will be shown. Students will be encouraged to contribute supporting material from their own literary and scholastic backgrounds. |
