Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
The aim of the unit is to give students an introduction to the functions of the financial markets, and to provide an understanding of the different types of financial markets (the banking system, the bond markets, the stock markets, and the markets for derivatives). The unit also considers key financial instruments and institutions. Focussing on the UK, the course analyses market inefficiencies, and the role of regulatory bodies such as the Financial Services Authority (FSA).

Learning Outcomes:
After attending this unit students should know about the major financial markets and institutions, and have an appreciation of market inefficiencies, and how these markets are regulated and controlled.

Skills:
Students will develop their analytical and conceptual skills, and an ability to present material and debate and defend positions through seminar based presentations and discussion.

Content:
Banking system; money markets; bond markets; stock markets, derivatives.
Regulation. Legal framework and regulatory bodies in the UK. Role of Central Banks, Monetary Authorities, and FSA.
