| Description:
| Aims: To familiarise the student with the methods used to measure functional pharmacological responses and to develop skills in using these techniques to study the systematic pharmacology of different organs within the body and in presenting scientific data in report and poster format. After taking this unit, the student should demonstrate (1) an understanding of the pharmacological techniques used to study the actions of drugs in isolated tissue and (2) an ability to write a scientific report and to plan, prepare and present a scientific poster. Learning Outcomes: At the end of the unit the student should be able to: * Plan a simple pharmacology experiment to analyse the activity of pharmacological agonists or antagonists * Execute the planned experiment and analyse the resulting data appropriately * Present the resulting data and draw appropriate conclusions in a practical report * Plan, design and present a poster based on experimental data. Skills: Study skills, including practical skills and team-working (T/F/A) ICT skill, handling information, data analysis (T/F/A) Written communication (T/F/A) Oral communication (T/F/A) Content: The student will undertake a number of in vitro practical experiments in pharmacology, one or more of which will be used to develop a practical report. |
