Description:
| Aims:
* To enhance language awareness in general and to introduce a systematic approach to the linguistic analysis of English.
* To provide a practical introduction to the phonology of English.
* To provide a self-contained introduction to the skills of TEFL, of practical use to students preparing to work as language assistants abroad.
* To develop transferable skills relevant to a career in foreign language teaching.
Learning Outcomes: A student who completes this unit successfully will show evidence of:
* awareness of the factors which influence teaching and learning
* understanding and use of basic ELT (English Language Teaching) terminology relating to form/meaning/language use/skills
* ability to analyse language for teaching purposes
* understanding the aims and stages of a language/skills lesson
* understanding the rationale for choosing specific resources and activities for a specific learner.
Skills: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking and effective communication in English are developed and assessed in this unit, along with practical teaching skills.
Content: An introduction to basic linguistics with a practical focus on the skills and systems of the English language; teaching methodology (the context for learning and teaching English as a foreign language, planning for effective teaching, classroom skills); selection and evaluation of resources and materials.
