Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
The aim of this unit is to provide students with an understanding of women's role in politics as well as to examine some areas of political theory in relation to gender and sexuality. The unit will explore issues surrounding gender, political representation, participation and policy: for instance, what can/should be done about male over-representation in legislatures across Europe? It will also cover key issues concerning gender and political theory: feminist understandings of 'the political' as well as a variety of theoretical approaches to the relationship between gender, sexuality and 'the state'. Students will be able to apply this knowledge in case studies comparing developments in European countries.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit students should be able to:
*demonstrate an empirical understanding of the position of women in European politics;
*demonstrate theoretical knowledge of the relationship between gender and politics;
*critically assess a range of theories concerning gender and government;
*apply this knowledge to real-world political developments.

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit.

Content:
The unit will cover the following topics:
*An introduction to gender and politics: defining 'the political'
*Gender, representation and participation
