Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To introduce students to the principles of data analysis with particular reference to business applications.

Learning Outcomes:
Students who pass the unit will be able to:
* convert raw data into comparable formats, e.g. index numbers or z-scores;
* classify data by level (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio); identify dependent and independent variables;
* carry out parametric statistical tests.
* carry out elementary project appraisal techniques such as simple Decision Trees and Discounted Cash Flow analysis.
* use relevant software applications: e.g. spreadsheets, at a "power user" level.

Skills:
Intellectual: identify the correct technique required to solve data analysis problems. Taught and assessed.
Professional: apply statistical techniques to business problems. Taught and assessed.

Content:

* Collection and presentation of data;
* Discrete distributions and continuous distributions;
* Descriptive statistics;
* Inferential statistics including correlation and regression;
* Index numbers;
* Elementary probability;
* Management applications of quantitative methods in finance, project management and decision-making.
* Computer applications which are useful for data analysis in a business and academic context.
