Description: | Aims: Over the last twenty years one of the most significant and controversial developments in European Politics has been the electoral rise of Far Right parties. One of the most durable parties in this respect has been the French Front National (FN) which has become a permanent feature on the French political landscape. The aim of the unit is to analyse why the FN has made significant electoral progress, look at the controversial nature of the party's policies and ask why many French citizens vote for the FN. While the main focus of the course is contemporary, the debate is also linked to both France and Europe's historical past and also situated in a comparative European context, focusing on the rise of Far Right parties in other French-speaking countries such as Switzerland and Belgium. The unit will be taught in French. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit, students will be able to: * Gain a critical understanding of key theoretical, historical and contemporary definitions e.g. fascism, Nazism, 'far-right', 'extreme right', 'radical right' etc. * Demonstrate a knowledge of the policies and issues espoused by the French Front National as well as understanding of their evolution. * A critical understanding of the major theoretical interpretations/arguments put forward to account for the rise of the Front National and related European far-right parties. Skills: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit. Content: The content of the unit will include the following topics: * The electoral rise of the French FN * Theoretical interpretations and explanations for the rise of the FN and related parties * The FN and discussion of the link to the historical past * The policies and issues of the FN * Analysis of FN voters in terms of demographics, motivations etc. * The FN within an EU context. |
