Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To provide students with an introduction to the basic concepts of molecular genetics in a human context, including genome organisation and gene expression, transmission genetics, the molecular basis of mutagenesis, population/quantitative genetics and applied genetics in the context of medicine and forensics.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this course the student should be able to:
* Describe how the chemical structure of DNA accounts for information encoding and its change
* Describe gene regulation and protein synthesis
* Explain Mendelian principles and their underlying concepts
* Describe how genetic variation is used in population genetics
* Describe applications of genomic knowledge in medicine, health and forensics.

Principles of genetics and genomic science. Four major areas: a) human genome organisation and gene expression, b) sources of genomic variation and principles of inheritance, c) basic principles of quantitative and population genetics, d) applied genetics. Additionally: 1) brief overview of recent technological advances in sequencing and bioinformatics analyses of genes and genomes as well as, 2) applications of genomic science to medicine and forensic science.
