To increase students understanding of analytical methods in the context of their application in areas such as clinical analysis, bioanalysis, environmental and pharmaceutical sciences, forensics and materials analysis.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit, students should be able to:
1. To be aware of the spectrum of applications of analytical techniques in fields such as clinical analysis, bioanalysis, environmental and pharmaceutical sciences, forensics and materials analysis
2. Undertake a critical comparison of analytical techniques including immunoassays, chromatography, mass spectrometry and related techniques, and make informed decisions about their applications.
3. Be aware of procedural issues that relate to the application of these analytical techniques
4. Apply this knowledge to the solution of problems relating to qualitative and quantitative analysis in a range of contexts.

Content:
Several analytical methods including chromatographic techniques, coupled techniques (GC-MS and LC-MS), immunoassays and bio- and electrochemical sensors will be discussed in the context of their application in clinical analysis, bioanalysis, and environmental sciences, forensics and materials analysis.
Knowledge obtained by students during Analytical Chemistry (CH20195) will be applied in this unit through discussion of several wide-ranging case studies emphasising critical factors required in order to obtain valid analytical measurement. The requirement to comply with regulations specific to different fields will be thoroughly discussed. This will include: quality assurance, EU/national regulatory requirements specific to each discussed field.
