To provide a detailed understanding of power system control, including stability control, frequency control and voltage control.

Learning Outcomes:
To list the modern electrical power systems' controllable components.
To state which operational quantities are at risk of instability in modern power systems.
To design controllers that enable the dynamic performance of extended power systems to maintain bus-bar voltages and system frequency within required statutory limits.
To explain the benefits of modern flexible load in achieving power system control objectives.
To state the effects and benefits of embedded generation and energy storage within the modern distribution system.

Skills:
To solve appropriate numerical problems (T & A).
To analyse and optimise the performance of the principal subsystems in an existing electrical power system (T & A).
To successfully apply fundamental principles of electrical power systems to a range of technical problems (T & A).
To synthesise a comprehensive and critical review of an appropriate technical area (F & T).

Content:
Modern electrical power system control components: Automatic Voltage Regulators; Governors; Power System Stabilisers; flexible loads; energy storage (including Electric Vehicles).
Mathematical models of the dynamics of modern electric power systems.
Control strategies aimed at controlling both steady-state and dynamic voltage, system frequency, energy mix and congestion management.
Practical laboratory exercises aimed at allowing the design and implementation of various control strategies within the distribution and/or transmission of modern electrical power systems.
Before taking this module you are advised to take EE30215 or equivalent.
