Description: | Aims: To provide students with the necessary tools to analyze and understand social choice and political economy problems such as: different voting systems, implementation of public policies, political institutions and electoral competition. Learning Outcomes: At the end of the unit students should: * Be able to understand the different voting systems and their advantages/disadvantages. * Be able to understand and use the concept of implementation and how it relates to social and political issues. * Be able to understand and distinguish the incentives provided by the different institutions governing the economy. * Be able to understand the different models of political competition and how these relate to real life situations. Skills: Problem solving, logical thinking, understanding of collective decision problems. Content: 1. Collective Preferences and Choice Problems 2. Restricting Outcomes and Preferences, Arrow's impossibility Theorem 3. The Spatial Model of Political Competition 4. Implementation of Public Policies 5. Decision Processes in Committees 6.
