This unit focuses on universities as professional organisations, their environmental embeddedness, their organisational structures and processes, organisational leadership, human resource management, the role of leadership and management, and how stability and change occur in higher education organisations. Through the unit, students should develop a critical understanding of organisational research and its application to the study of universities as organisations and their management.

Learning Outcomes:

* Critical understanding of key research concepts in organisational research and the study of universities as organisations
* Familiarity with different approaches to the organisational study of higher education and key theoretical perspectives (e.g. neo-institutionalism)
* Awareness of types of data and types of data analyses used in organisational research in higher education
* Critical awareness of the implications of change in the field of higher education for leadership and management in universities
* Critical understanding of approaches to organisational change management in higher education

Skills:
Students who successfully complete this unit should develop:
* The ability to critically appraise research on universities as organisations identifying their strengths and weaknesses
* The ability to critically analyse change in the field of higher education and its implications for higher education organisations
* The ability to critically reflect on the role of leadership and management in organisational change in higher education
* The ability to develop coherent and relevant questions, approaches and strategies for research on universities as organisations
All skills are initially taught/delivered in seminars, and then facilitated through further discussion and individual work. All skills should also be evident in the final assessed work.
