The unit aims to introduce students to the structure of different business models, the framework of Business law and the fundamental legal concepts which affect businesses and individuals, their potential liabilities, and the ways in which they function in practice as well as in the context of the overall degree objectives.

Learning Outcomes:
On completing this unit students will be able to: identify the key legal principles relevant to business contracts, and the structure of the courts through which legal rights are enforced; assess contract terms, and the implications for the parties. The students will understand the main forms of business and the liability of businesses and individuals involved in them. They will also understand the process for resolving disputes involving contracts.

Skills:
Intellectual skills: Analyse legal materials; identify legal principles, exceptions and applications. (T) Understand the importance of clarity and consistency and applying those principles in the context of tutorials, assessed coursework and an examination. (T/F/A)
Practical: Students will be required to apply their research in a practical situation, involving analysis of problems, assessing the weight of criteria to be applied and presenting their findings (individually) to the group. T/F/A

Content:
This course will equip students to understand the law relevant to the different business models, business contracts, and the structure of the courts through which legal rights are enforced. Students will be able to identify whether contract terms are applicable and the consequences of terms not being complied with. They will also recognise the liability of businesses and individuals in respect of torts and statutory duties, The unit will examine the following areas of law
[a] Introduction to concepts of law, divisions, terminology.
[b] The structure of the courts and personnel of the law.
[c] Formation of contracts
[d] Terms of contracts
[e] Termination of contract, including breach and the consequences.
[f] Dispute resolution.
[g] Formation of businesses
[h] Partnerships
[i] Companies: internal management and control
[j] Termination of a business.
[k] Insolvency and its consequences.
