Description: | Aims: This unit aims to familiarise students with the key principles of translation studies as these are applied in the practical work of the professional translator. Students will be required to critically reflect on competing approaches to translation as well as carrying out translations themselves in one of the languages they study, informed by their reading of the translation studies literature. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, students will be able to: * Demonstrate a critical understanding of mainstream approaches to translation studies * Apply principles from the translation studies literature to their own translations * Critically reflect on their own and others' translations of a variety of texts * Understand the role of the professional translator. Skills: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit. Content: Topics covered in this unit will include: What is translation?; A history of theories to the present; Equivalence and the nature of meaning; Translation as Process and as Product; Culture and ideology in translation; Gender and sexuality in translation Philosophical approaches to translation; The ethical role of the translator; Globalisation and international institutions; Conflict and peacekeeping; New media: machine, audio-visual and collaborative translation; Commentary writing. |
