Description: | Aims: To extend knowledge, heighten awareness, and develop an understanding of a range of contemporary clinical psychology research topics, interventions and issues. Learning Outcomes: On completion of this unit, students should be able to: * Critically evaluate current research in clinical & health psychology. * Critically evaluate the various techniques and interventions employed by clinical & health psychologists. * Critically appraise the research methods and techniques employed in contemporary clinical and health psychology research. Skills: Can demonstrate originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in the psychology (T/F A) Can evaluate critically current research and advanced scholarship in Psychology. (T/F A) Can evaluate methodologies and develop critiques of them and, where appropriate, to propose new hypotheses. (T/F A) Can communicate ideas and research findings both effectively and fluently by written, oral and visual means. (T/F A) Content: Seminar presentations in selected research based topics given by departmental and visiting research staff. These presentations will address contemporary issues in advanced clinical psychology and could include the following areas of work 1. the promotion of health, 2. prevention and treatment of illness and disability, 3. analysis and improvement of the health care system 4. post-traumatic stress disorder, 5. ruminative thinking, 6. depression. |
