Description: | Aims: The overall aim of this course is to provide an introduction to bio-inorganic chemistry with a focus on the role of d-, f- and p-block metals in biology. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this Unit, students should be able to: * Demonstrate an understanding of how and why the coordination chemistry of metals are used in biological systems; * Account for the bonding features relating to structural and reactivity patterns in simple biomolecules; * Demonstrate an understanding of the roles of metals in medicine and nanotechnology as therapeutics or diagnostics; * Account for the considerable current academic and industrial research attention attracted by transition metals in bioinorganic chemistry by critical assessment of current literature on bio-inorganic chemistry. Content: Metals in biology - basic coordination chemistry and analytical methods used in bioinorganic chemistry - metal containing enzyme systems - structural role of metals - metals in medicine, imaging and nanotechnology. |
