The intention of this unit is to:
* introduce students to current global policy priorities and their development with reference to `Education for All' goals, the EFA Global Monitoring report, and the Sustainable Development Goals. .
* Develop students' awareness of educational inequalities in low income contexts and the particular groups of children who do not access education regularly and/or experience discrimination in educational settings.
* introduce students to the relationship between social marginalisation and educational marginalisation.

Learning Outcomes:
In completing this unit students would be expected to:
* critically review the development of key national and international policy documentation on the education of children
* recognise different perspectives and theories that help us to understand education and inequality
* Critically engage with these perspectives and theories to explore how geography, gender and socio-economic disadvantage serve as major barriers to education ( that serve as major barriers to education
* Evaluate the effectiveness of international and national policies and interventions for children in accessing education.

Content:
The following topics will be included:
* Historical background to the current global policy context for education in low income contexts (including EFA, the MDGs and SDGs)
* Theories and perspectives for exploring educational inequalities (e.g. rights- based approaches and key concepts of inclusion, marginalisation and equity)
* Global inequalities - which are the main groups of children out of school? What characterises these groups (e.g. geography, gender, poverty)?
* National inequalities - case studies of countries with large educational inequality (e.g India, Ecuador, South Africa)
* Global, national and local interventions to support all children to access school and improve their learning and livelihood outcomes.
