Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To enable students to develop their understanding of how research methods can be best applied in the context of their professional practice.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit students should:
* have an understanding of techniques of small-scale enquiry, including case study and action research approaches.
* understand how to generate professionally relevant research questions, to develop an appropriate research design, and to locate and review literature in appropriate fields.
* be familiar with methods of data collection and techniques of analysis in professional contexts.

Skills:

* Production of concise, scholarly, written communication to agreed specifications and deadlines
* Analysis and synthesis of written information from multiple sources
* Development of arguments through the precise use of concepts
* Oral presentation skills
* Selection, presentation, interpretation and analysis of numerical data
* Working independently
* Formulation of research questions and research design to answer them.

Content:
The unit will develop students' understanding of: techniques of small-scale enquiry; the relation of professional interests to academic fields of study and the location and review of appropriate literature; the ethics and parameters of undertaking research in professional contexts, and appropriate research designs for such contexts. Where relevant unit content will include issues and empirical research (including guest speakers from within and outside of the University) relating to 'childhood, youth and education'/ 'education for international development'.
