Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To introduce students to the design and operation of digital logic systems including combinational and sequential logic circuits. To illustrate the applications of these circuits in digital subsystems and systems and to appreciate the advantages of the alternative methods of implementation.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit the student should be able to:
* manipulate Boolean expressions, including minimisation by algebraic and graphical techniques;
* design basic combinational and sequential digital circuits from functional specifications.

Skills:
Numeracy; problem solving; working independently.

Content:
Combinational logic: the binary system, Boolean algebra and gates, logic maps, minimisation. Applications: adders, subtractors, comparators, parity circuits, multiplexers, encoder/decoder circuits. Programable logic implementations: ROM, PLA & PAL structures and implementation of logic circuits. Sequential logic: synchronous & asynchronous circuits, latches & flip-flops, registers & counters. State machines & design methods, internal state reduction, state assignment methods.
