This unit aims to demonstrate the significance of theoretical perspectives in Sport and Social Science that underpin empirical research and the creation of knowledge. It does this by exploring key paradigms and the distinct theorists whose work has been influential in the construction and application of these perspectives.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit students will be able to:
* Understand the dominant theoretical concepts of positivism, interpretivism, critical theory and post-structuralism and identify specific theorists whose work emanates from and/or informs these paradigms.
* Identify the theoretical perspectives that inform contemporary writings within Sport and Social Science.
* Understand the complexity and subjective nature of paradigmatic categorizations.
* Evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, similarities and conflicts of multiple theoretical approaches to sport and social science.
* Apply the work of specific theorists to physical activity, sport and leisure contexts.

* Positivism and Post-Positivism: key concepts and thinkers (e.g. Comte, Durkheim, Popper)
* Interpretivism: key concepts and thinkers (e.g. Goffman, Weber, Merleau-Ponty)
* Critical Theory: key concepts and thinkers (e.g. Marx, Gramsci, the Frankfurt School, Zizek, feminism, postcolonialism)
* Post-Structuralism: key concepts and thinkers (e.g. Foucault, Butler, Deleuze, Haraway).
