The aim of this unit is to develop students understandings of the ways in which academic and practical understandings of sport and exercise psychology are important in preparing students for certain careers in sport, exercise, health and physical activity. The unit aims to do this by:
* Enhancing understanding of the theoretical assumptions underpinning mental skills.
* Increasing their awareness of ethical issues in applied sport and exercise psychology.
* Increasing their awareness of the link between theory, practice and the professions through addressing contemporary issues likely to be faced within the career pathways that underpin the programme.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
* Understand a range of mental skills and their theoretical underpinnings.
* Appreciate ethical issues that may arise during the consultancy process.
* Appreciate the importance of the link between theory and practice in applied sport and exercise psychology.
* Apply their knowledge of sport and exercise psychology to a range of professions (not limited to the sports industry, teaching, coaching, exercise prescription, fitness and health professions).

Content:
The following topics will be covered:
a) An examination of a variety of mental skills, constructs and techniques (including goal setting, self-talk, imagery, self-efficacy and relaxation) and the theoretical basis for their function.
b) Ethical issues in sport and exercise psychology.
c) The relationships between sport and exercise psychology and relevant professions
d) Examination of the theoretical and practical input sport and exercise psychology knowledges can bring to contemporary social issues: such as psychology and children's physical activity, prescription of physical activity for illness and health impairments, psycho/social determinants of bodily disorders, self esteem and body image, and sports performance.
