Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
Operations Management (OM) is about the effective and efficient transformation of materials, information and people. This unit opens up the strategic challenges associated with creating economically and environmentally sustainable value and introduces the key themes of operations design, planning and control and improvement.

Learning Outcomes:
Via exposure to a range of practical tools and frameworks, key learning outcomes relate to understanding of how service and manufacturing operations can be effectively managed. Specifically understanding how to:
* manage end-to-end processes; building on generic characteristics (e.g volume, variety, variability) and the challenge of navigating the capability-commodity transition.
* match capacity and demand - including the analysis and control of queues.
* continually driving operational performance - including the management of quality failures.

Skills:
Intellectual skills:
* a critical awareness of current issues and frameworks in managing manufacturing and service operations (T/F/A)
* the facility to apply functional OM knowledge into a range of complex situations, whilst taking into account the overall implications for other areas of the business (TF/A)
Professional practical skills:
* evaluate and practically deploy a range of OM approaches (T, F)
* operate effectively both independently as well as within teams and assume leadership roles where appropriate (F)
* the ability to acquire and analyse data, information and situations; to evaluate relevance and validity, and synthesise it in context of topical business problems (A)
Transferable/Key skills:
* openness and capacity to continue learning with the ability to reflect on earlier knowledge and practice and integrate the new with past experience and effectively apply it to the present situations (T/F)
Personal/Interpersonal:
* an ability to manage and work in teams with an awareness of issues such as culture and gender, to identify learning/working styles and to use these to the benefit of the individual and the team (F)
* the facility to communicate, especially through written and oral presentations, preparation and production of effective business reports (T/F/A)

Content:
The unit will cover issues relating to operations design, planning and control and improvement. For example it will:
* Present and discuss key operations strategy models; including understanding the many types of alignment needed in order to have a good Operations strategy.
* explore the different process types and the need for fit between processes and tasks.
* provide tools and concepts that can be used to better understand customer needs, expectations and perceptions.
* develop capabilities to analyse, (re)design and improve processes.
* explain the critical importance of planning and controlling capacity and understanding of basic queuing principles.
* Explore the fundamentals of process control and continuous improvement.
* explain the importance of capacity management and introduce basic tools for capacity planning and control.
* Introduce basic concepts of process measurement.
* Critically appraise a range of improvement methodologies: from TQM and Kaizen to Lean 6 sigma.
