Description: Aims:
To provide an opportunity for students to develop their individual research interests through the study of an aspect of the history, theory or practice of architecture in depth, and to present this material primarily in written form. The paper is to take the form of an academic piece of writing structured with a clear argument that reaches a balanced conclusion. The paper should be written as a balanced review of archive material, or as a survey of a building and/or associated products.

Learning Outcomes:
Students who have completed this unit will be able to demonstrate critical understanding of how knowledge is advanced through research to produce clear, logically argued and original written work relating to architectural culture, theory and design.

Skills:
Independent research; considered response to tutorials; exposition of argumentation in clear, written English.

Content:
The students will be introduced to research methods and their application through formal presentations. The paper is to be on a theme selected by the candidate and agreed to by the unit co-ordinator. It is to be written in English, have a maximum length of 5,000 words, together with a 300 word abstract, and is to be illustrated as necessary. It is to be properly referenced and contain a full bibliography. The paper is to be prepared in the format specified and should be ready for publication. Each student will be required to present their paper in a session open to all students. The paper provides an opportunity to explore research issues that will be further developed in their design studio project.
