Synopsis: This unit will allow you to deliver more optimally designed low-carbon building solutions by holistically integrating the complex inter-related technical disciplines, (such as Building Physics, BIM, Dynamic modelling), within specified sustainability targets. The skills acquired to manage these often conflicting design challenges will mimic those required by modern building design practice and prepare you for such a multi-disciplinary workplace.
Intended Learning Outcomes: Compare the impacts of a BIM supported design process with that of more traditional approaches.

Recognise the design tensions that exist between many building physics phenomena and how they inform their low carbon building design decisions.

Simulate and manage the design tensions of building physics parameters during the design process foroptimal low carbon design solutions.

Evaluate how low carbon building envelope solutions may be combined and integrated for the optimalthrough-life performance of low-carbon buildings.

Developa full understanding of the regulatory and political context under which buildings are constructed.
Content: BIM:
  • Introduction, standards, implementation and future technological trends in sustainable BIM projects and related infrastructure.


Building Physics (BP):
  • Design tensions between inter-related building physics parameters and how they contribute to LC building designs.


Dynamic Modelling:
  • Building Physics & Modelling vs reality.
  • Simplified & Dynamic modelling environments


L-C Building Envelopes:
  • Opaque and non-opaque L-C Building Envelope solutions.
  • LCA & Responsible sourcing of LCBEs
  • Towards zero-carbon with Building Integrated Renewables
