Synopsis: Learn how to integrate technical design approaches to maximise the environmental performance of buildings in a holistic manner. This includes aspects of passive and active design such as shading, ventilation, acoustics, lighting and renewables.
Intended Learning Outcomes: Perform calculation techniques to assess various factors including:
  • the transmittance of shading devices and illuminance and quality of light;
  • appropriate lighting strategies in buildings;
  • appropriate ventilation design;
  • the acoustic design of buildings and external noise environment and independently assess the performance of the internal acoustic environment;
  • Compare a range of low and zero carbon energy technologies available and analyse their use in reducing the energy demands of buildings.
Content: Design and calculation of:
  • Ventilation;
  • Acoustics;
  • Lighting;
  • Renewable systems integration.
