Description: Aims:
To develop skills in planning, undertaking, and hypothesis-driven evaluation of literature in the biomedical sciences at the level of advanced research. To develop professional skills in the effective presentation and communication of scientific knowledge.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this course the student should be able to:
* Plan and undertake research of primary and secondary literature at a substantial and advanced level
* Critically interpret and evaluate the literature with the aim of addressing a specific overarching hypothesis
* Coherently report the outcome of this work according to professional scientific writing conventions and standards
* Support and defend the work in a viva voce examination.

Content:
All stages are undertaken under the guidance of an academic supervisor. The planning stage involves defining the problem, formulating hypotheses, devising an appropriate strategy to test them within constraints of time and resources, and locating sources of reliable information. The investigation stage involves the acquisition and evaluation of information from the scientific literature. The analysis and interpretation stage involves the assessment of how the information gathered relates to the original problem, and may sometimes make use of appropriate statistical techniques. It will always evaluate results in relation to published work. The social and policy implications of the research may also be considered. The final phase is to communicate the outcome of the project in the form of a coherently written report that puts forward and justifies a thesis and meets the professional standards of scientific written communication.
