Description: Aims:
The unit provides a theoretical grounding in the fundamentals of molecular biotechnology leading to the latest advances in the development and application of these biotechnologies in medical or plant/agri-based industries.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit you will be able to:
* Apply your understanding of your core knowledge underpinning molecular biotechnological concepts in protein biochemistry and technology development and application in industry
* Critically evaluate and communicate the findings of a cutting-edge molecular biotechnology research publication through a formal presentation
* Critically evaluate, synthesise and summarise the findings of a variety of cutting-edge molecular biotechnology research publications through a written literature review
* Demonstrate an integrative and evaluative approach to addressing some of the challenges and opportunities in molecular biotechnology

Content:
The unit provides a theoretical grounding in the fundamentals of molecular biotechnology leading to the latest advances in the development and application of these biotechnologies in various fields. Topics will include fundamentals of molecular biotechnology, covering protein and enzyme biochemistry, biocatalysis and plant biotechnology, development of new technologies (applying principles of high-level biophysics) and the application of technologies relating to the biopharmaceutical, industrial, food or agro-industries.
