Description: Aims:
To provide a fundamental understanding of enzymes as catalysts, at a physio-chemical level, and to relate these molecular properties to their cellular functions.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this course the student should be able to:
* describe the relationship between protein structure, ligand binding and enzyme catalysis;
* explain how enzymes achieve their high catalytic rates;
* explain steady-state kinetics of enzyme-catalysed reactions, the nature of reversible inhibition, and the effects of temperature and pH;
* describe and carry out the requirements of reliable enzyme assays;
* explain allosteric regulation in the control of enzymes;
* describe the organisation of cellular enzymes into multienzyme complexes and multifunctional enzymes;
* describe the role of isoenzymes in cellular regulation, development and differentiation, and their application to diagnosis of disease;
* describe and explain the role of coenzymes in enzyme catalysis.

Skills:
Learning and studying T/F/A, Written communication T/F/A, Numeracy & computation T/F/A, Laboratory skills T/F, Information technology T/F, Problem solving T/F, Information handling & retrieval T/F/A, Working independently T/F, Career preparation T/F.

Content:
Ligand binding; steady-state kinetics; inhibition; effects of temperature and pH; principles of enzyme assay; theories of catalysis; allostery; isoenzymes, multienzyme complexes; coenzyme chemistry.
