Description: Aims:
To provide students with an overview of how molecular biology and molecular techniques are directly impacting on medicine and health.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this course the student should be able to:
* Explain the molecular and biochemical systems that are of use in medical diagnostics and treatment;
* Explain the development and uses of molecular approaches to the treatment of some major medical conditions.

Skills:
Knowledge and understanding T/F/A, Intellectual skills F/A, Written communication T/F/A, Numeracy F/A, Data acquisition, handling, and analysis T/F/A, Information technology T/F/A, Working independently F/A

Content:
Characteristics of molecular systems relevant to medicine and health; Molecular diagnostic techniques of use to medicine (immunological, biochemical, genetic, cellular, imaging); Example case studies (e.g., diabetes, Parkinson's, obesity, cancer, bacterial and viral infection); Molecular approaches used to understand medically relevant issues and develop interventions (genomics for vaccine and chemotherapeutic target identification, epidemiology and prediction, regenerative medicine, personalised medicine).
