Description: Aims:
The aim of the unit is to give students a thorough grounding in the fundamental reactivity of radicals, and the most important radical-mediated reactions in organic synthesis. It will also introduce modern catalysis concepts that are applicable to reactions proceeding via radical intermediates.

Learning Outcomes:
After studying this unit students should be able to:
* Understand the factors that affect the structure, stability, and reactivity of radicals;
* Describe why radical chemistry is useful in synthesis;
* Explain the mechanisms of both chain and non-chain radical processes;
* Appreciate the catalysis modes that are relevant to radical-based reactions;
* Apply the information learned to solve unseen problems in radical chemistry selected from contemporary research literature.

Skills:
Problem solving (T, F, A)
Scientific writing (F, A), Independent working (F)
Group working (F)

Content:
1. Fundamentals of radical structure, stability, and reactivity.
2. Methods for radical generation.
3. Radical chain reactions (with and without Bu3SnH).
4. Additions of radicals to alkenes.
5. C-H bond functionalisations.
6. Redox reactions via radical intermediates.
7. HAT (hydrogen atom transfer) catalysis.
8. Redox catalysis with transition metals.
9. Photoredox catalysis.
10. Mergers of different catalysis strategies.
