Aims: To provide an introduction to porous materials such as classic zeolites, MOFs, ZIFs, COFs, AlPOs, mesoporous silicas, focussing on their structures, properties and applications.
Learning Outcomes: After studying this Unit the student should be able to:
* describe porous materials and their uses
* relate porous materials to wider classes of functional materials
* identify important applications of porous materials
* understand what makes a particular material suited to a particular task
* highlight future applications for porous materials
* critically review progress in this area of chemistry
* critically analyse recent research papers.

Content: Introduction to zeolites and other porous materials (history, classification). Chemistry of porous materials. Catalytic sites and their influence. Framework structure. Flexibility and its influence. Computer modelling and prediction of structures. Biomineralisation. Host-guest chemistry. Synthesis and structure determination. Structure determination challenges. Experimental methods for analysis. High-temperature and high-pressures studies. Industrial zeolite catalysis. Behaviour of confined molecules in porous materials. Macroscopic, microscopic and spectroscopic methods for probing sorbed molecules. Modelling methods for probing sorbed molecules. Applications of porous materials (catalysis, Ion exchange, separation, storage, drug delivery).
