Description: Aims:
The aims of the unit are to extend the students' experiences of the design process used for mechatronic solutions. The unit will provide an opportunity to use mechatronics to produce a detailed solution to a more advanced design challenge. This unit is designed to further develop students' expertise in integrating mechatronic hardware and software, in order to deliver a developed mechatronic prototype. The unit aims to provide an introduction to: basic printed circuit board design; and timing critical software design (interrupt based programming).

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit a student will be able to:
* Design, construct, and evaluate the performance of a mechatronic solution to an open-ended problem.
* Design basic printed circuit boards.
* Integrate and optimise appropriate motor types, servos, actuators, feedback sensors in the designed system.
* Create control software with a known response speed to mechanical stimuli.
* Troubleshoot mechanical, electronic and software errors.

Problem solving (F/A); mechanism, circuit board and electronic system design (T/A); independent and team working (F/A); mechatronic design skills (T/F/A); presentation skills (A); written communication (A).

The unit will include taught content, advanced mechanism design and basic circuit board design. Students will be free to select components as appropriate for the design task. The use of interrupts in embedded software design will also be taught.
To support design process learning, the principles of systems engineering, concurrent design and multi-disciplinary design management will be introduced. Tutoring and studio-based working, will support design and problem solving skills for mechatronic projects.
