Aims: To provide students with an insight and an understanding of energy management systems and power system protection.
Learning Outcomes: After completing this module, students should be able to:
Describe the major components of a modern energy management system (EMS); Describe key functions in the economic operation and control of modern power systems, including security assessment and mitigation against potential threats; Describe how a power system network may be divided into manageable units suitable for protection; Design protection schemes.
Skills: Application of information, techniques and methods to the operation and dynamic control of an electrical energy system in order to deliver an affordable, sustainable and secure electrical supply.
Content: Modern power system operation and control: overview; generation planning, scheduling and control; security of supply.

Basic concepts of power system protection: overview; overcurrent protection: differential protection.
