Description: Aims:
To introduce the physiological adaptations that occur as a result of participation in regular exercise and physical activity; and to understand how these adaptations lead to improvements in health.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:
* Understand some of the relationships between exercise/physical activity and health; including the impact on physiological risk factors for chronic diseases (and the processes involved in the development of such diseases).
* Understand key concepts and terms such as 'exercise', 'physical activity', 'physical inactivity' and 'sedentary'.
* Understand the risk-benefits of physical activity for health

Content:
Health and disease in the UK and other developed countries, physical activity/exercise terminology and definitions, physical activity measurement, dietary analysis, impact of physical activity/exercise on chronic diseases and risk factors for disease (cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia/hypercholesterolaemia, cancer, osteoporosis), risk-benefits of physical activity, individual responses to exercise/physical activity.
