Description: Aims:
To provide students with an overview of the complete innovation insights framework and to allow them to apply this framework to stimulate innovation in automotive propulsion systems. Students will be expected to deploy skills learnt in the Strategic and innovative thinking and Automotive propulsion systems business processes units.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit the student will be able to:
* apply creativity frameworks (principally human centred design) to innovate in automotive propulsion systems
* apply systems thinking in an automotive context
* work in a trans-disciplinary team and have the skills to encourage inclusion, self-worth and collaboration
* demonstrate the benefits of reframing a problem statement/technology and challenging/incorporating current viewpoints
* evaluate technology development in a system context and identify further opportunities/applications by challenging paradigms/current scientific understanding adopting alternative points of views/insights from the analysis.

Skills:

* Collaborative learning
* Team working
* Leadership
* Oral communication
* Written communication
* Reflexion on prior learning
* Critical thinking
* Data and information analysis of complex systems
* Application of own expertise with an understanding of the system implications
* Dealing with incomplete data
* Problem solving
* Data sourcing and collection.

Content:
This course will follow the Automotive propulsion system evaluation unit and students will be asked to use creativity frameworks to provide an innovative solution to improve the powertrain system previously evaluated. Students will work in small teams to come up with an innovative solutions, to build prototypes, to test these against their success metrics. Students will be asked to consider the business case for their proposed solution and present this at the Department of Mechanical Engineering annual design exhibition in May. Formative reviews will be given through the semester.
