Description: Aims:

* To provide students with an in-depth appreciation of strategic management in a global context;
* To explore key issues and topics in strategic management and how they may be resolved;
* To help develop strategic thinking, analysis and judgement.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit, the student should be able to:
* determine the relationship between the external environment and the development of strategy;
* analyse and characterise the nature of the strategic situation facing a firm or other organisation;
* identify feasible strategic responses to that strategic problem context;
* assess strategic responses;
* advocate a strategic option after assessment.

Skills:
Knowledge and understanding
* An appreciation of the principles and practices underlying contemporary, strategic and sustainable leadership in organisations;
* An appreciation of the fundamental frameworks necessary to understand internal and external organisational contexts as well as theoretical foundations underpinning the links between business and society;
* Appreciation of the strategic management and development of people/human capital within organisations: the fundamental principles of human resource management;
* Appreciation of the key areas of operations management and the relationship between operations strategy and business strategy both within and between organisations;
* Ability to manage development of the mission, objectives and appropriate strategies of organisations within prevailing environmental and organisational constraints;
* An understanding of research and how to integrate the knowledge of a variety of functional and theoretical areas through application to organisational problems.
Skills
* appreciation of the interconnected nature of organisations and ability to apply both theoretical and practical understanding;
* analyse operational issues at a strategic level in both service and manufacturing environments;
* operate effectively within teams as well as independently , assuming leadership roles where appropriate;

* an ability to develop a holistic perspective on an organisation and an understanding of how the different functions relate to one another.

Content:
The unit introduces students to the core issues, themes and perspectives in the strategy field as well as selected new and emerging approaches. Beginning with an introduction to the field, the unit will normally cover the following areas:
* Assessing the competitive environment
* Assessing, developing and maintaining strategic resources and capabilities
* Competitive/business level strategy
* Corporate strategy
Globalisation will be covered in the context of Strategic Management:
i) In a contextual sense - ie process of globalisation, as well as countervailing processes, in the context of external macro-environmental analysis
ii) In a strategic and organizational sense, ie the adoption (or non-adoption) of global strategies and structures
Political issues will be included within macro-environmental external analysis, as will elements of Political/Non-market strategy.
