| Description: | Aims: This unit aims to develop an advanced empirical and theoretical understanding of the nature and dynamics of the economic, political and cultural features of globalisation. Throughout the unit, the ramifications for higher education as a system and the university as an organisation in responding strategically to global opportunities and risks will be developed. Learning Outcomes: * Application and critique of major theories relating to the relationship between globalisation and its differential impact on higher education systems * Identification of key international organisations and their impact on the economic, political and cultural dimensions of higher education * Understanding of multi-level conceptual analysis incorporating the mediation of global forces at national and local levels * Introduction to large scale global comparative data and data analysis * Critical evaluation of the impact of major macro global trends on the roles and functions of higher education. Skills: Students who successfully complete this unit should develop: * The ability to critique and apply major theories relating to globalisation and its impact on higher education * The ability to identify the precise ramifications of global drivers for a variety of national systems * The ability to evaluate the evidence for and against the effectiveness of global policy prescriptions * The ability to develop alternative policy proposals to global prescriptions * Identify gaps in the knowledge base of globalisation and higher education * Networking, professional, and team development skills * Time management skills appropriate for doctoral research, particularly in the context of a professional doctorate. All skills are initially taught/delivered in seminars, and then facilitated through further discussion and individual work. All skills should also be evident in the final assessed work. Content: Typical content covered in the unit include: * Theories relating to Globalisation and the Knowledge Economy * The influence of international agencies and organisations such as the World Bank, the UN and the OECD * Global markets in higher education * Global Status competition and higher education ranking * Transformations in the role and function of higher education * Transnational and borderless higher education * Higher education and global public goods * Higher Education and regional development. |
